Shit We Missed This Week: July 21

*We didn’t miss it, we just didn’t post about it, so we are now.

Shit we missed this week is your weekly wrap-up of stories that were not covered on the main feed of The Introvert Archive - because I am one person and cannot possibly cover every single news, lifestyle, or women’s health story that I want to. We’ll round out the week with five news pieces, five tidbits and five of more of the sugary pop culture stories from the week that was.

All weekly recaps will be available in written form and as a podcast for accessibility.

Here is the shit we missed during the week of July 21, 2023.

NEWS PIECES

Katherine Campbell, a senior public servant involved in Robodebt has been suspended without pay. From 2011 to 2017 Campbell was the Secretary of Human Services, before moving to a position as Head of Social Services from 2017-2021. These senior leadership positions allowed her to be directly involved, and in a high position of power, in Robodebt. The Royal Commission found that Campbell allowed ministers to be misled concerning key details about the scheme when it was introduced, and then ignored or suppressed advice about its issues. Her current role, which she has now been suspended from is in the Department of Defence where she was an advisor on the AUKUS military partnership agreement.

A shooting in New Zealand has left two people dead and six others, including police injured. The shooting occurred at 7 am local time on Thursday in the Auckland CBD. The gunman, who was also killed, made his way through a building site armed with a pump action shotgun, shooting as he did so. The 24-year-old man, who wore an ankle monitor but had special conditions that allowed him to work on the building site, was charged with domestic violence-related offences in March, landing him a five-month sentence of home detention.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews this week announced that he was pulling the pin on the 2026 Commonwealth Games due to be held in Victoria. The initial cost of hosting the games in Victoria was budgeted to be $2.6 billion, but when that figure blew out to $7 billion, Andrews decided to pull the plug. The money that was allocated for the games will now be redirected to regional housing.

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup has commenced! At the time of recording New Zealand had won their first game 1-0 against Norway and Australia has also won theirs 1-0 against the Republic of Ireland. Sam Kerr was pulled from the first game, and will also miss the second game after a calf injury sustained in training on Wednesday. The hope is that she will return in 11 days for the final pool stage game against Canada on July 31.

NSW Police have tasered and shot dead a man with known mental health issues during a welfare check in Glebe, Sydney. Police were called by neighbours when they had concerns about the man’s well-being, which they responded to at 11:50 pm on Wednesday. According to reports the 43-year-old man was wielding a knife when police arrived, before being tasered and shot, and dying at the scene. The matter will now be investigated by the NSW State Crime Commands Homicide Squad and be subject to an independent review.

TIDBITS FROM THE WEEK

  • Tasmania becomes the first Australian state to recognise asexual people by adding the A to the LGBTIQA+ acronym.

  • Cases of HIV in Australia have halved in the past decade, and we’re on the right path to eliminating transmission of the virus altogether. In the last year, 555 cases of HIV were diagnosed, 57% of which were diagnosed in men who have sex with men.

  • The government has announced it is scrapping the rule that says students who fail more than 50% of their subjects are not able to access a student loan and must pay upfront instead. Scott Morrison introduced the 50% pass rule back in 2020.

  • A large unidentified object, believed to be space debris is being investigated by State and Federal authorities after it washed up on a WA beach on Sunday. The debris was confirmed to be safe, but people were urged not to touch it as it sits on the beaches of Greenhead, a small town north of Perth.

  • Western Australia and the Northern Territory are now the only places in Australia where a landlord can evict a tenant with a valid reason. South Australia announced this week that a “no grounds evictions” ban will be instated, meaning landlords can not evict someone in a fixed-term lease, or a period tenancy without an eligible reason to do so.

5 SUGARY STORIES

Let’s finish off with five pop culture and celebrity tidbits from the week that was.

  • Kylie Jenner has been replaced as the highest-earning Instagram influencer. She has been bumped down to number two by Portuguese football player Cristiano Ronaldo.

  • Nevada police have confirmed that they issued a search warrant just this week in connection with the murder of Tupac Shakur in 1996. The rapper was shot four times, 27 years ago before he died six days later.

  • Two of the most anticipated movies of 2023 have been released- Barbie and Oppenheimer. The true winner will be announced next week when the opening weekend figures are released. I would put my money on Barbie, though it has come back with some mixed reviews.

  • Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez have announced their separation after two years of marriage. While Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello have announced they are divorcing after seven years together.

  • And to wrap things up with some good TV news: The Bear season 2 is officially on Disney Plus in Australia and Aussie classic, Thank God You're Here is making its comeback next week!

That’s all for this week!
